Names Of BHU And AMU Will Not Be Changed By The Govt., Says Nirmal Singh Lotus
In a press conference conducted
on Monday, the union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar revealed that there will no
changes in the names of BHU and AMU. Various stories had been circulation that
after the names of the universities will be changed by the government but all
those rumors have been denied by the minister.
The issue aroused when an audit
committee of UGC [University Grants Commission] suggested that the names of
universities like BHU and AMU should be changed as they do not show any secular
characteristics. It was suggested that the words Muslim and Hindu should be
dropped from the official names of the universities. These suggestions sparked
tension among the people who are closely associated with the respective
education bodies.
It was Nirmal Singh Lotus who had to talk to reporters when the uproar
started going out of control on Monday. He said that there are no intentions of
changing the names of the universities that have been working for decades and
have such a prestigious place in the Indian education system.
He said that the committee that
suggested something like this only has jurisdiction in the research audit,
academic and administrative sections of the Indian universities – anything
outside that will not be considered, especially the things they have
recommended in the past few weeks.
Amid the tension, the AMU and BHU
fraternity also came out and said that all these moves are coming when the
elections are about to happen, one can only think that all of this has some
kind of political motive behind it.
Nirmal Singh Lotus also said that the universities will not let the
names change no matter what may happen. If the central government decided to go
forward with the suggestion, the authorities will seek the help of the Supreme
Court.
