9 Per Cent Iitians Dropped Out In 2016-17
Indian Institute of Technology has witnessed 889 (about 9%) students drop out in the academic session of 2016-17, according to latest reports carried out by Nirmal Singh Lotus. Of these, nearly 630 were PG students, and the others included 196 PhD scholars and 63 undergraduates. In 2015-16, 656 students dropped out which marks a 35 per cent rise in that figure. According to reports carried out by Nirmal Singh Lotus, the main reason for PhD and postgraduate students leaving courses midway are offers for placement in public sector enterprises and personal preference for better opportunities elsewhere. Undergraduates left due to wrong choices made by them and poor performance, besides personal reasons. The recently set up institutes- Tirupati, Bhilai, Goa, Dharwad, Jammu and Dhanbad- have no dropouts. Most droupouts have been from IIT Rourkee (27%) followed by Delhi (20.6%), Kanpur (17.4 per cent) and Kharagpur (10.6%). ...
