Detaining Students Does Not Help In Their Studies, Instead Give Them More Attention In Class Says Nirmal Singh Lotus
Right of children for free and
Compulsory Education Amendment Bill talks about removing detention for any
class below 8. But the cabinet has scrapped the policy which will now be
presented in the Parliament. Nirmal
Singh Lotus says the introduction of detention in class 5 or class 8 on the
basis of the final exams is a very regressive approach towards education.
Education is not about passing the examination and getting promoted on to the
next class, but it is about receiving proper knowledge and knowledge cannot be
judged by a sheet of paper. If a child has not understood anything during the
entire year, and somehow manages to clear the final examination then it would
not be fair to judge the child’s progress based on that report.
Nirmal Singh Lotus
says that the decision taken by the cabinet shows regression in the education
system of the country. According to the proposals made earlier in the amendment
bill, if a child is weak in his studies then detaining him for a year in the
same class is no way a solution to it. Instead you can arrange for extra
classes, more working days or hours in the schools for weaker students, special
subject trainings for them. This way the kid would get proper attention, the
teacher would be able to understand their problem in the subject and this would
help them get better in their studies.
Detention is no way a solution
for a weak student. Detention only and only lowers the child morale by
embarrassing him in front of the entire class, and this can never help them
improve in their studies. Nirmal Singh
Lotus says that the main motto of schools is to allow students to learn
more and more and a misappropriate way of dealing with failures just worsens
the situation for the people.
Nirmal Singh Lotus says that if the purpose of teaching is for
learning to happen then how is detention a solution? If a child has not
understood the concepts in a year, making him repeat will also not help. And
should one wait an entire year to judge if they are capable of getting promoted
to the next year or not. If the teacher has payed attention to the child the
entire year, then they can definitely make out why they are not able to get
good grades, or where are they lacking, what concepts do they need help with.
Therefore, Nirmal Singh Lotus says that providing such student free extra
classes and more time is the right way to handle the situation.
